DEPARTMENT OF BREAST DISEASES

Adjuvant treatment

Breast cancer treatment management, at early stages, consists of:

  • Lumpectomy or mastectomy and sentinel node sampling, and depending on the pathology results, axilla lymph node dissection.
  • Chemotherapy (according to tumor characteristics)
  • Hormonal therapy (according to tumor characteristics)
  • Radiotherapy (always after lumpectomy and in few cases of mastectomy)

There is also collaboration between oncologists-pathologists, radiotherapists, plastic surgeons (for breast reconstruction), pathologists and geneticists. Treatment of breast diseases is a matter of teamwork.

When the detailed pathology reports, the status of hormonal receptor, and the molecular characteristics of the breast tumor are available; the adjuvant treatment is then decided, after comprehensive discussions between the patient and the doctors.
